Athlete's foot treatment

What Is Athlete's Foot?

Athlete's Foot, also known as ringworm of the foot and tinea pedis, is the most common fungal foot infection. It is a skin infection caused by a fungus, usually occurring between the toes or on the soles of the feet.

Causes

A group of mold-like fungi called dermatophytes causes these infections. These organisms normally inhabit skin but proliferate under unfavorable conditions. Dermatophytes thrive in damp and closed environments.

  • Thick, tight shoes that squeeze the toes together
  • Wearing damp socks and shoes in humid conditions
  • Plastic shoes that create warm, moist environments
  • Walking barefoot in public locker rooms or pools

Symptoms

  • Itching, flaking, and scaly skin between the toes
  • Blistering and peeling skin
  • Cracking and excessive dryness on the foot sole
  • Burning or stinging sensation

Treatment Options

Over-the-Counter

  • Antifungal medications (topical creams, sprays, powders)
  • Always dry feet thoroughly after contact with water
  • Change socks daily and wear breathable shoes

Prescription Treatment

When standard over-the-counter approaches fail, Dr. Ravaei may prescribe a combination of medications designed to provide more comprehensive therapeutic outcomes, including prescription-strength antifungals and other interventions tailored to your specific case.
